Lana Rose Nelson grew up competing in sports. At 18, she started choosing substances over sports. Her recreational use turned into a full-blown addiction. She moved multiple times to “outrun herself”. Lana experienced trauma throughout that time that perpetuated her addiction.
Her family convinced her to be on a documentary which ended up being the TV show, Intervention on A&E. When she went to the treatment she didn’t speak for the first two months.
After hitting her rock bottom, Lana had a spiritual experience that changed her life. Lana checked herself into Steps Recovery Center where she surrendered and put her faith in God. Lana attended a fellowship and shared that doing step work is what helped her achieve a life in long-term recovery.

Stacie Later CSW, discusses her struggle in school, being told she was “unwilling to learn”. After switching schools, Stacie found out that none of her credits transferred. As a junior, she had to complete multiple packets on top of her other classwork to ensure she would graduate. Stacie felt overwhelmed and turned to abusing pain pills to relieve the pressure she was feeling. Stacie realized she had a problem and needed to change her ways when she found her young nephew playing with matches after she had passed out. Stacie detoxed in her basement and changed her social circle. She went on to get her master's degree in social work.
After losing a friend and coworker to suicide, Stacie knew she wanted to help others who were also struggling with thoughts of suicide. Stacie shares different warning signs, and risk factors for suicide. She also shares what to do if you are worried a loved one may be thinking of suicide.

Tasha Locks grew up with a father who struggled with anxiety/depression & often used alcohol to cope. At the age of 7, Tasha recalls counseling her father while he was intoxicated, hiding her tears from him. Tasha struggled with depression in her teen years, leading to herself using alcohol to “numb out”.
At the age of 16, Tasha was sent to a youth wilderness program, she shared “it didn’t give me what I really needed”. She vowed to herself that she would create a better way to help teens in her situation. Today Tasha has founded “Youth arising”, a nonprofit organization that helps youth with mental health, connecting with peers, and transitioning into adulthood. Tasha recognizes that her substance use was because of her mental health struggles. She is able to help youth learn how to manage their emotions and lives in a healthy way.

Jason Clawson was living his dream life when his wife was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. She passed on after nine months of treatment. Jason was left feeling alone, angry, and overwhelmed. Jason took the skills he had learned while working as a clinical therapist in addiction treatment and created a healing team with his closest family and friends. His healing team helped him work through his grief and learn to find happiness again. Jason is using his experiences to help others work through their own grief and find happiness again through his business “Giving Sunshine”.

Kelsey Olsen worked in the medical field for 11 years while in active addiction to alcohol. Her toxic marriage moved her from Utah to Oregon where she didn’t know anyone. After getting divorced, Kelsey hit rock bottom when she found herself in an unfamiliar area of Portland, alone and scared. Today Kelsey is a recovery, health, and fitness coach. Amber Bride shares her story of being left by her parents at the age of 4, being left by her grandma at the age of 12, and was given to a family friend who was paid to take care of her. As Dr. Sellers stated, “I wanted to start using at the age of 4 in her story”(16:05). Amber’s addiction didn’t start until the age of 34 when Amber had major back pain. Her addiction took her to become homeless three times, being arrested around Christmas time, and being diagnosed with cancer. After Amber had her cancer removed, she ended up accidentally overdosing during a blizzard. Amber went to Annie’s House in Draper, UT where she learned how to cope with life’s difficulties and set boundaries. Amber got a job working right next to her treatment outpatient building. However, she was still homeless. Her boss turned an office into a residence for Amber where he stocked the fridge so she would have food to eat. This loving act gave her the feeling of self-worth. “It started the true belief of my worth” (42:27). “I just kept doing the next right thing” (47:09) is how Amber is able to stay strong in her recovery today.

The recovery community does NOT recommend starting a relationship early in recovery (first 12-months). While in treatment, Mandy and Luke broke those rules and beat the odds, but learned the hard way that they needed to work their own separate programs. Jared asked, "what advice they would give somebody who’s thinking about getting into a relationship in early recovery"? Mandy stated, “I’d say wait at first and just focus on yourself” while Luke stated, “Yeah, don’t do it. It makes everything a lot harder” (51:01).

Can those of us in recovery take opioids for serious injuries? Jared points out, “We all have this fear that we’re just going to take a Percocet Five and all of the sudden we’re back abusing heroin the next day”(32:23).
In episode 61, Cody Martensen shares his experience being five years clean and then breaking his tibia and fibula. He was prescribed opioids pre & post-surgery, he shares how he resisted old cravings. He recalls, “One of the things my sponsor recommended was “we flush the last one” (42:28). In addition, Dr. Seller’s addresses the medical point of view, “If you reveal to a doctor that you are in recovery and because of that he decides not to treat your pain, go get another opinion” (41:22).
